Zhuogu village has 2 small schools handling 1st - 3rd
grades. In 2007 IDEAS helped the village rebuild the first school and
now will help rebuild the second.
The old school is almost 40 years old, has no windows, and has
a student population of 20-30 students each year. The dirt floor,
leaky roof, and lack of electricity all contribute to the poor learning
conditions present in this building for so many years. The toilet
facilities consist of an outhouse building with a shallow pit and no toilet
fixtures. This outhouse is not only unsanitary, but also unsafe.
The new school was completed in November 2008 and is
constructed of concrete block
walls, tiled roof, windows, and concrete floor. Expenses were shared between IDEAS and the village with the village providing all of the
construction labor. The finished product provides a safe, clean,
well-lit learning environment that will last many years. In addition
to building a new school house a new toilet facility was constructed
with separated waste storage.

This year's students and teacher
The teacher's been teaching students in this building for over 20 years for only a few dollars per semester.
This building is constructed of rammed earth and is over 30 years old. The roof leaks, there are no windows, no electricity, and therefore, no lighting.
There are about 25 1st-3rd graders each year at this school. The only lighting comes through the open doorway. In the winter there is no heat.
This is the school's toilet facility. Basically, it's a building with a pit in the middle; no fixtures of any kind.
This open pit is what the students use as a toilet. It's very unsanitary and dangerous.
The school construction was started in August '08.
The new school is built next to the old one (on the left).
This year the school has 26 students. Other years there are as many as 40 1st and 2nd graders.
The education department joined us on our final inspection.
One major improvement is the construction of a new outhouse. The old facility was simply a shallow hole in the ground.
In addition to the building, IDEAS provided new desks and chairs.
