Home Construction
Project (Completed April 2008)
The farm homes in this high mountain
village were some of the oldest and smallest in the area. While other
villages have experienced a small degree of development, this village is
still living in unsafe, unsanitary conditions. This project was
recently completed and has helped
21 families build new homes. Thank you for helping these families!

Project Outline |
Replace 20 old,
dilapidated homes with 20 new homes. This portion of the village
is situated high on the mountainside, separate from the main
village. Due to its high elevation and remote location the
residents are significantly poorer than those in the main
village. The high elevation limits the type and quality of crops
they're able to grow and the remoteness limits their access to
schools, jobs, and local markets. Therefore, their homes have not
improved as have those in the lower village. The roofs are
constructed of wood planks, floors are still dirt, and animals are
housed inside the house. Most homes are in disrepair and some are
falling down. The local residents are requesting assistance to
build new, simple homes that will provide a safe, clean home for
their families.

Local officials visit project
Local officials from the poverty alleviation department visited the completed homes with us and were impressed by the quality of construction and low cost of the project. Our IDEAS home office representatives came out to the village to see the various project sites. These residents were very glad to invite us into their new home, and see their new kitchen. This new stove design provided as part of this project is fuel efficient and more healthy for residents with the flue installed. Officials from the local poverty alleviation department were pleased with the quality of the new homes. All the materials were hauled up the mountain to the village either on horseback or by backpack. The old kitchens are inside the home and the stoves have no flue so the smoke gathers inside the house. New homes have separate kitchens and new stoves have flues. Typical bedroom inside a farmhouse. No conveniences, no walls. Here, high on the mountain side, farmers main crops include buckwheat and potatoes.
